Choose a mix

Your plan offers a flexible fund lineup

If you'd rather build and manage your own portfolio, the plan's lineup includes a variety of options. Use them to create a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds and cash alternatives.

If you decide to create your own diversified portfolio, make sure you understand the objectives and risks of the funds you are considering, and be prepared to monitor your investments.

As you think about constructing and managing your investment portfolio, keep these considerations in mind:

  • Under or over diversifying. Spreading your money out over different fund types helps you neutralize risk from any one investment. But, too many can lower the effectiveness of your investments, and too few can expose you to more risk than you intended.
  • Not rebalancing. Different funds perform differently over time with market ups and downs. It's important to review your investments periodically to ensure your portfolio's balance hasn't shifted so much that you're exposed to more or less risk than you want.
  • Too much or too little risk. It's generally good practice to invest more conservatively as you approach retirement. If you have too much or too little of your portfolio invested in stocks, you may be investing too aggressively or conservatively for your age.
  • Indecision. Remember, if you choose a target date fund, each fund is already diversified. If you're uncertain when you'll retire, you might think you need to invest in multiple target date funds. Not true. Just use your best estimate to choose a date. You can always move your money to another fund as your retirement plans firm up. Remember, the target date fund's mix automatically becomes more conservative as your target retirement date approaches.
